Clearly if you are just starting out with your new book or just a website with hopes of a book someday, an online campaign can be a strategic marketing piece to your making an impact as an expert and reaching your target audience. However, clients often approach us who are successful in terms of receiving pay for their content. They reach millions of people and do not understand why they might want to work with websites who will not pay for their content.

Having worked with hundreds of clients and many prominent and strategic websites, I can offer you some sound and practical reasons why you as an author or an expert NEED to consider offering your content to these sites.
  1. Diversification
    Every expert in every field from Finance to Health knows that you never want to put all of your eggs in one basket. Successful experts will tell you that it is prudent to promote your work on as many venues as possible. It is easy to be lured by the compensation offered by a particular website, when what that really means is that you will not have the freedom to place that content on any other sites. This is due to the fact that paid content is often the property of the site and you as the author are not free to disseminate the content to other sites.

  2. Credibility
    Authors who are known for their expertise and bestselling books are not associated with particular website exclusivity. Look up any well-known author on Google and you will find an author who is associated with a wide variety of websites.

  3. Universality
    Best-selling authors have the appearance of being everywhere. When producers of top TV shows or print publications are looking for experts, they do not look for a particular website’s experts; they are looking for experts who have a large presence online as a whole.

  4. Marketability
    Authors who have made the top lists are authors who know they need to go beyond just getting published. They know they need to have an identity that clearly states who they are, and one site just cannot provide that. Being the paid Family and Health Expert on iVillage can mean great things for sales. However, being the Family and Health Expert on twenty sites will do more for your overall sales and media placements than the one site will do, regardless of how big the one site is. Producers and the public don’t care how much a site is paying you. They care about credibility and that means when they do a search, how often does your name come up on different websites and how much presence do you have on those sites?

    Website exposure is a new breed of publicity. It is difficult to measure its worth. One visit on Good Morning America MIGHT result in hundreds, even thousands of book sales. However, in many cases it does not. So don’t make the classic mistake. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Diversify your content. Offer simple tips and short articles that can be placed on dozens of sites and watch your overall success and exposure give you the results you are looking for!


WHAT THE INTERNET CAN DO FOR YOU
  • Repeated exposure – Due to the ongoing content changes on prominent websites, there is a tremendous opportunity for repeat postings by an author, thereby getting their name out on a consistent basis. This is a crucial key to success.

  • Articles and content are sought after – People go to the Net specifically to read and research topics of interest. By placing content on the proper sites, authors and experts have a much higher “contact rate” with their audience. Television and radio audiences are often not involved with the shows they have on.

  • Expert status – The opportunity to become an expert is high with the Internet due to the vast numbers of sites available. This can help increase your credibility, exposure and provide content for further projects.

E-NEWSLETTER MARKET REPORT

For most individuals and companies email newsletters have become an extremely effective vehicle for building customer relationships, establishing credibility and generating sales.

Emarketer.com, an aggregator of online marketing statisitics, recently released its latest E-Mail Marketing report. Here are a few highlights:
  • Email volume in the United States is projected to nearly double from 1.5 trillion in 2003, to 2.7 trillion in 2007.

  • Email penetration is at an all-time high of 91 percent among Internet users between the ages of 18 and 64.

  • In the US alone, 88% of adult Internet users have personal e-mail accounts. Further, 46% of them have e-mail access at work. Added together, eMarketer estimates that currently 147 million people across the country use e-mail, almost every day.
Most e-newsletter subscribers opt-in looking for best practices, tips, trends, news and a viewpoint, but not necessarily to be overwhelmed with marketing/sales messages. The objective then of your newsletter is to establish or enhance a relationship based on trusted content. This content then drives readers to your website where they take a desired action – register for a contest, buy a product, join a forum and in some way move the prospect or customer to THE next level of relationship.
